A 17-year-old high school student recently hit a pedestrian in Danvers with his car, sending the 64-year-old man to a Boston hospital with serious personal injuries.

Police said it did not appear that alcohol, drugs or excessive speed were factors in the incident, but that solar glare played a role in the collision. After an investigation by Danvers police, the driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

A Look at the Numbers

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that there were 70,000 pedestrian injuries resulting from collisions with vehicles in 2007. There were an additional 4,654 pedestrian deaths in those crashes.

The NHTSA says pedestrian fatalities tend to occur in urban areas (73 percent), at night (67 percent) and at street locations other than intersections (77 percent). Ninety percent of pedestrian fatalities happen in normal weather.

More than two-thirds of pedestrians killed that year were male, and nearly half of the pedestrian accidents took place on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Perhaps the most disturbing pedestrian fatality statistics concern children killed in collisions with cars: kids age 15 and under accounted for eight percent of all pedestrian fatalities in 2007 and 23 percent of all pedestrian injuries in crashes.

Be Visible

Safety advocates urge pedestrians to wear reflective clothing and to carry a flashlight when walking at night. Pedestrians are also urged to use crosswalks, to look both ways before crossing the street and to exercise extra caution at intersections.

Experts say it's much safer to walk on a sidewalk, but if for some reason you must walk in the street, do so while facing traffic.
