Omani researchers believe wadis could hold key to algae biofuel production

February 8, 2018 |

In Oman, researchers from the Sultan Qaboos University believe the sultanate is ideal for macroalgae production for biofuels in the longer term thanks to a number of suitable wadis. Algae grows naturally in the wadis following rains when nutrients accumulate. By studying the wadis’ different green and blue algae species, they believe some that produce higher lipid contents can be identified for further development. As research is still in its early stages, it’s not likely to become viable until oil is over $100 per barrel.
