If Islamic extremist Ahmed Alid had had his way, he would have continued with his killing spree through the streets of Hartlepool on the morning of October 15.

He was arrested minutes after he had stabbed seventy-year-old Terrence Carney to death; after he thought he had killed his Christian housemate Javed Nouri. Mr Nouri, 31, survived his injuries - but Alid, 45, thought he had killed two people as he was taken into custody at Middlesbrough police station at 6.36am.

Whilst waiting to be booked into a call- he made his intentions clear: "My hands are injured. Hadn't been for that, I would have continued the Ghazwa (raid)."

The Moroccan refugee later claimed at his trial, that the Tunisian translator had wrongly interpreted what he said. His claim that he hadn't intended to kill his Iranian housemate Mr Nouri or pensioner Terrence Carney, when he attacked both men.

Alid wasn't questioned until the next day. Calm and cooperative, after his injured hand had been treated, he answered questions from two counter terrorist officers. There was no sign of the manic man marching around with a kitchen knife the day before.

Alid replies with a simple "yes" when the officer asks him, "Are you responsible for Mr Carney's death?."

Alid appears coherent: "The whole issue is for the independence of Palestine. To have two dead victims is better than more. We want this brutal coloniser to depart from Palestine.

"If the Zionist coloniser does not leave, the victims will be much greater. If the Zionists do not leave, here in Britain there will be a flood."

Alid said he stabbed Javed Nouri six times and continued: "...even if I had a machine gun the number of victims would have been more. I swear by Allah, there would have been thousands...." before going on to say that it was his intention to kill more people, because innocent Palestine children have been killed.

"They killed children and I killed an old man. I'm ready for Shahada (martyrdom)."

During his trial, Alid claimed he had been "angry" during the police interview, and that he didn't mean what he said.

Towards the end of his police interview, Alid began to get agitated with his interpreter. One of the officers, Detective Constable Harvey, stood between Alid and the interpreter - to try and protect the man.

Alid then stood against the custody suite door. The officer tried to get him to move but he lunged at her, put his arms around her and got hold of her. The second officer pushed the panic button before trying to free her colleague - but a scuffle broke out and all three ended up on the interview room floor.

Alid still had hold of Detective Constable Harvey, but police outside were now able to get in.

Alid was found fit to stand trial by a psychiatrist. He has no previous criminal convictions. Whilst he lived in Hartlepool, he was in constant contact with his family in Algeria. He did not attend a local mosque.

The Moroccan national remains in HMP Durham, until he is sentenced next month.
