German firm buys Iowa cellulosic plant

The idled DowDuPont cellulosic ethanol plant near Nevada, Iowa has been purchased by Verbio North America, the U.S. subsidiary of a German biofuels company.

Verbio says it will use the plant to produce natural gas made from corn stover and other cellulosic crop residue. It plans to start construction of the renewable gas operation next spring and begin production by the summer of 2020.

The plant will be Verbio’s first renewable natural gas facility outside Germany.

DowDuPont closed the Nevada plant last fall, saying it no longer fit with the company’s strategic plan.
