Environmental advisory board seeks new members

Oak Ridge, Tenn. – The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management invites nominations to fill vacancies on the Oak Ridge Site Specific Advisory Board (ORSSAB). The 22-member board is a federally chartered citizens’ panel launched in 1995 to provide recommendations to the agency regarding cleanup activities across the Oak Ridge Reservation.

The deadline for submitting applications is January 16.

Technical expertise is not required for board membership. The board is seeking a broad spectrum of backgrounds and viewpoints from residents in the communities and counties surrounding the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation.

Applications are accepted from residents in the following counties: Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Knox, Loudon, Meigs, Morgan, Roane and Union. Terms are for two years, and members may serve up to three terms.

The board and its Environmental Management & Stewardship Committee meet monthly to discuss and develop recommendations on cleanup decisions and topics such as cleanup strategies, hazardous waste management, and long-term stewardship. The board also reviews the Environmental Management program’s planning decisions, annual budget requests to Congress, and cleanup-related documents.

Membership applications are available on the board’s website at www.energy.gov/orssab, by email at orssab@orem.doe.gov, or by calling (865) 241-4583 or 241-4584.

ORSSAB meets the second Wednesday of most months at 6 p.m. at the DOE Information Center, 1 Science.gov Way in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The board’s next meeting is on November 14, and it will focus on the topic of ensuring adequate waste disposal capacity to continue Oak Ridge’s environmental cleanup.

All ORSSAB board and committee meetings are open to the public. For more information, visit ORSSAB’s official website at www.energy.gov/orssab or follow the organization on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ORSSAB and YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/ORSSAB.
